Chapter Fourteen – How to Save a Life

Hours had passed since the snow had swallowed Gwen whole and Nicholas had yet to find her. The layers of snow made his senses useless and he was becoming distraught with his inability to find her. There was nothing but white on all sides and with Gwen being as pale as she was he couldn’t see any distinguishing marks that would give away her location. With his heart racing in his chest, blocking out anything but his own fear for her, he couldn’t hear the sound of her voice. Her tantalising fragrance was driving him mad, there were traces of it everywhere but nothing was concentrated enough for him to track her down. With none of his senses helping him find her he moved blindly, dashing from one area to another, digging frantically through metres of snow before moving on to somewhere else.

His hands were frozen from the mountains of snow he’d dug through trying to find Gwen but he couldn’t feel the icy chill seeping into his bones. His mind was plagued with visions of the heavy snow crashing over Gwen’s fragile body, engulfing her desperate scream. The sound of her voice calling out to him played endlessly in his mind reminding him of his failure as a mate. He’d sworn to protect her, to give his life for hers and at the first test he’d let her be taken from him.

Throwing back his head, Nicholas let loose an anguished roar. “Gwen!!”

Desperation made him reckless and he began running over the mountain wildly, delving his hands into the snow before racing on to repeat the same frenzied action elsewhere. He refused to believe she was dead. He’d know if his beloved mate was no longer alive but the weight of the snow would have crushed her, breaking fragile bones and bruising delicate skin. Gwen was hurting and he couldn’t find her to make it better. He was prepared to roar his desperation to the world again when he caught a glimpse of blue fingertips poking out of the snow from the corner of his eye.

“Gwen?”

He bounded towards her, uncaring of the slippery snow beneath his feet and dug her out of her icy coffin. Her skin was blue from the cold and her heartbeat sluggish but she was alive and he breathed a sigh of relief as he pulled her against his chest. Her body shivered and he sprung into action, rushing down the mountain until he was safely at its base. It was difficult to construct a fire with her held closely against him but he was unwilling to endure even a second’s separation from her. When the fire was finally made, its flames heating Gwen’s cold skin, Nicholas retrieved his heavy jacket and began stripping her from the soaking wet clothes plastered against her skin. He cursed his body’s inconsiderateness when his shaft was flooded with heat at the sight of her naked body and quickly dressed her in his warm, dry shirt.
